What do you enjoy about dark fiction?

What does everyone like about reading/writing dark fiction? I like that little shiver I get when I read a scary story, but I also enjoy the fact that I’m actually safe while I do it. When I write dark fiction, I like building suspense and tension. That doesn’t always come with happy fiction.
