Before SES was founded, Audette ran a digital marketing agency. In 1995, he started promoting his website using natural search engine optimization techniques—and in doing so, grew his business from $200 a month to over $20,000 a month in just six months.
In 1996, Audette decided to formalize his techniques into a course, and launched the first ever SES conference. The conference was a huge success, and Audette soon found herself at the forefront of the SEO industry.
SES has since become one of the most well-known and respected names in SEO and has played a major role in shaping the industry over the years.
Keyword Density and Spamming
In the early days of SEO, one of the most popular techniques was keyword stuffing—i.e., including your targeted keywords as often as possible on your website (including in meta tags and ALT tags), with no consideration for the quality of the content.
This led to a lot of spammy websites that were nothing more than keyword-rich gibberish. Search engines soon caught on to this, and began penalizing websites that engaged in keyword stuffing.
This was the beginning of the end for spammy SEO techniques, and it ushered in a new era of quality-based SEO.
Algorithm Updates: Google
As the internet has evolved, so too has Google’s search algorithm. In the early days of Google, the algorithm was a lot simpler and could be easily manipulated through keyword stuffing and other spammy techniques.
However, as Google has gotten smarter, it has released a series of updates to its algorithm that have made it harder to manipulate. These updates, collectively known as the Google Panda and Google Penguin updates, have targeted spammy SEO techniques and penalized websites that engage in them.
The Google Panda update, which was released in 2011, specifically targets low-quality content, while the Google Penguin update, which was released in 2012, targets websites that engage in spammy link building techniques.
The Google Panda and Penguin updates have fundamentally changed SEO and have made it a lot harder to rank your website without quality content and links.
This has led to a new era of SEO where the focus is on creating high-quality content and building high-quality links rather than spammy techniques such as keyword stuffing and link building.
