Let’s Not Lose Our Chance (English-Chinese Back-Issue, Sunday, 26 April, 2020) Opportunities, Part 2

“Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not your’s but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved.”  Paul the Apostle, 2 Corinthians 12:14-15

Let’s Not Lose Our Chance (for Sun. 26 Apr. 2020), Opporunities, Part 2

• Last week we learned that, when God gives us a chance to do something special for Him or others, we need to take the chance, or lose it.

• There are many ways to do something special for Him or others, but one way is by giving money to Him, either by giving it to the church or by giving it to other people who need it – not so we can get “face” or get something from them later, but just to please God and help this person.  Now please don’t get turned off, thinking, “this person wants me to give money to religious organizations,” that’s not what this is about.  It is about improving yourself, while pleasing the Lord and helping other people at the same time.

• If we give to God or to others for God, we are saving up treasures in Heaven. Let’s look at Matthew 6 again:

Matthew 6:19

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

• Our treasures are our time, our strength and our money. We can love God more by giving Him more of our time, energy, and/or money. It is our choice. If we give God more, we will love Him more.

• According to the Old Testament model, just giving ten percent expresses normal love for God. If we give more, however, we will love Him more, and will receive more in return (although this should not be our goal):

2 Corinthians 9:6

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

(As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.

Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)

• So, if you give little of your “treasure” (time, energy, money) to God or others, you will get little from God or others. You can save everything for yourself, but that will be lonely and you will get nothing from others.

所以,如果你给神或给别人 一点点你的“财宝”(时间,精力,钱),你会从神或从别人 得到一点点。你可以不为神或为别人付出,都为自己积攒起来,但这样你会很孤单,也不会从别人得到什么。

• On the other hand, if you give more to God and others, you will not only become a better person, but feel better, care for God and others more, have better relationships with others, and be blessed more by God!

• When Paul encouraged Christians to give more, he also emphasized he was trying to teach them, not to get any benefit for himself, but because he loved them and cared for them. See Paul express his heart:

2 Corinthians 12:14

Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not your’s but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved.

• Paul was trying to tell them, that although he was encouraging them to give to God and others, it was not because he was trying to use them, but because He loved them and wanted the best for them. Another example:

2 Corinthians 13:7

Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates.

• This is another example of Paul telling us Christians, that he wants us to do right, not so he can look good, but because doing right is good, even if Paul himself looks terrible. If we are willing to do right, it is good for ourselves!

• Likewise, your church does not want or need your money, because God will take care of His churches; but you have a chance to give to God this way, and to build a better relationship with Him and with others.

• The main point of this is that God will give us chances to do things for Him, whether it is by spending our time, effort, or money.

• If we choose not to do this, we will lose the chance to help God, lose the chance to help others, lose the chance to become better people, lose the chance to get blessings from God, AND God will give the chance to someone else. There are several examples in the Bible but here is one:

Acts 28:23

And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:

For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

• Paul here is preaching to the Jews, telling them that God is giving them a chance to believe in Jesus. Choosing to believe in Jesus is doing something special for God. At that time, just like now, some people believe and some don’t. Finally, Paul tells them, because you are not all accepting Jesus, God is going to give this news to the Gentiles, and they will believe it.

• Let’s think about what we should be doing for God. Are you spending your time for God as you should? If not, then God will let someone else do it and you will lose the chance. Are you doing any work for God? Are you giving money for Him according to the Bible’s principle of ten percent?

• You don’t have to do these things – but if you don’t, you will lose the chance do something special for God, you will lose the chance to improve yourself, you will lose the chance to get special blessings from God, and God will just let someone else do these good things instead of you.

• Let’s not lose our chances to do these special things!

让我们不要错失属于自己的 可以做特别事情的机会!

Let’s Not Lose Our Chance (for Sun. 26 Apr. 2020), Part Two (Summary):

1. If we give money to God by giving to the church or to others for Him (not to get face or to get anything back), we are storing up treasures in Heaven (Matthew 6:19-21).

2. We don’t have to give to God like this, but if we don’t, we are losing a chance to love God more, love others more, and be blessed more.

(2 Corinthians 9:6-10)

3. When Paul encouraged Christians to give like this, he also told them it was not to get something from them, but because he loved them and wanted them to do well (2 Corinthians 12:14-15, 13:7).

(哥林多后书12:14-15, 13:7)

4. Neither God nor your church needs your money, because God has everything and will take care of His churches, but giving to church is a way to increase your relationship with God and others and be blessed.

5. Paul told the Jews that if they did not do something good for God, which was believe in Jesus, that God would take the news about Jesus and preach it to the Gentiles, and that they would believe it (Acts 28:23-28).

保罗告诉犹太人,如果他们不愿意为神做事(相信耶稣、接受救恩), 那么上帝就会把关于耶稣的福音赐给外邦人,外邦人会相信。

6. Likewise, if we don’t take opportunities to do something good for God (or other people) that we should do, whether giving time, effort, or money, God will give the chance to someone else. Let’s not lose our chances!

同样,如果我们不抓住机会,为神(或为别人)做些 应该做的好事,奉献时间,精力或者金钱,上帝会把机会给别人。

Practical Application 实际应用

• Some simple things you can do for God are to pray, read your Bible and go to church, or give money to the church to help God’s work. Beyond this, you can also watch for chances to do things for other people; someone may need some special help from you someday soon. God will make the chance clear to you, and then you just have to decide to take it or not.

Discussion 讨论

• Did you, or anyone you know, ever lose a chance to do something for God, and regret it later? How did this influence you or them?

你,或者你认识的人,曾经错失了可以为神做事的机会,之后后悔了吗? 这如何影响了你或他们?

• There are many special things we can do for God anytime, such as Bible reading, prayer, etc. but some things we cannot do until God prepares the opportunities and shows them to us. What special thing (or things) would you like God to give you the chance(s) to do in the future?

(Examples: I hope God will give me a chance to use my talents to help someone soon; I hope He will give us more chances to share the Gospel so more people can believe in Jesus; I hope God will let us teach more people to follow Him better; I hope God will let us meet more people who love Him so we can do more work for Him together!)

  1. I think this is one of the reasons why it feels good to do charity work. I used to volunteer as a “listener” on a therapy app. Well, not exactly a listener as the conversations are message-based. Anyway, I think that I ended up helping myself even more as I help others.

    1. Yes absolutely, exactly — helping people in whatever way possible, whether it be physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually, the last being the most important in the eternal scheme of things. Being a listener on a therapy app is an important thing. Kind of like being a — friend! 😀
