She Risked Death Either Way (for Sun. 19 Apr. 2020) Opportunities, Part 1

Esther 4:7

And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.

And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;

All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or women, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words.

Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.

For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

• In this story, an evil man planned to order all the Jews in the country killed. When Mordecai found out, he asked Esther the Queen to ask the King to stop this, but Esther was afraid, and told him it was dangerous.

• Mordecai told her that she now had a chance to do something for God and for her people, the Jews, and that if she didn’t do it, God would just use someone else. We often have a chance to do something for God, and if we don’t do it, God will just use someone else, and it will be our loss.

• We should value the chances that God gives us to do important things. We can choose not do them, but if we choose not to, it will be our loss. God will find someone else to do it. Let’s not lose these chances.

Malachi 3:8

Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.

• In the Old Testament, God told the Jews that they had to give Him ten percent of what they earned. If they did not obey, they were punished. In the New Testament, we are not forced to give, but as Christians it is a chance for us to do something for God. The Jews gave to the priests, and we Christians may give to our church. Does God need it? No…

Psalm 50:7

Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God.

I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.

I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.

For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.

• So if God controls everything, and can get anything He needs or wants, why does He ask us to give to Him? Because it is about love. He wants us through giving to Him to learn to love Him and become better people.

所以,如果神掌管一切,祂能得到任何祂需要的或祂想要的,为什么祂还让我们给祂十分之一呢? 因为这是关于爱。祂想让我们通过奉献来学习爱祂和成为更好的人。

Matthew 22:37

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

This is the first and great commandment.

And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

• Just like this says, we know we are supposed to love God and love our neighbors. But how do we love them? Do we just create a feeling in our hearts? Of course not. Love comes from our “treasures”.

Matthew 6:19

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

• The point here is that we do not give to God, through priests or our church, because God needs it. We give because it is a chance to improve our love for Him, and for others.

• As Matthew 6:20 says above, we will save up treasure in Heaven for ourselves this way, but our motive should be love, not more treasure.

• So, whether we have a chance to spend our time, our energy, or our money for God, let’s not lose the chance, as Mordecai warned Queen Esther. If we lose our chance, God will just let someone else take it.

Let’s Not Lose Our Chance (for Sun. 19 Apr. 2020), Part One (Summary):

1. Esther had a chance to save the Jews by talking to the King, but she was afraid. Mordecai told her if she didn’t take this chance to help, then she would lose the chance and God would use someone else. (Esther 4:7-14)

2. We need to pay attention to what chances God gives us to do things for Him or for others in His name (for others, but for Him, not our own “face”), and try not to lose these chances.

3. God told the Old Testament Jews to give Him ten percent of their income by giving it to the priests. If they did not, they were punished. If they did, they would be blessed. (Malachi 3:8-11)

4. Now we as Christians are not forced to do this, and in fact God does not need us to do it (Psalm 50:7-12), but we have a chance to do it by giving to our church. It is a chance to do something special for God.

5. God does not need us to give to Him, but He wants us to give, because by giving to Him our time, effort or money we will love Him more and He will reward us. (Matthew 22:37-39, Matthew 6:19-21)

上帝不需要我们给祂什么,但祂想让我们奉献,因为通过为祂奉献我们的时间、精力或钱,我们会更爱祂,祂也会奖赏我们。(马太福音22:37-39, 马太福音6:19-21)

Practical Application: 实际应用

1. There are many ways in which we can “give” to God. We can give our time and effort by praying, reading the Bible, and going to church. We can also give time and energy if people need some help. It will be for God so long as we are not just doing it to get “face” or some other benefit.

2. Another way we can “give” to God is by spending our money for Him. It is a Christian tradition to give ten percent to our church (this is a tithe), and if we give more than that, it is called “a love offering”. Churches who get more money can do more for God; those that don’t get more are baby churches which must be helped by other churches. That’s OK at first.

3. Think about what you can do for God. Whatever God gives you represents a chance for you to do something for Him, whether He gives you free time, special abilities, or money. Pray about how you can use those for Him, and watch for the chance to do it. Let’s not lose our chances!

Discussion: 讨论

• What special chances have you had to do something for God? Did you take those chances? Let us share, that we may learn from each other.

• Think about what special things God has given to you, that you might be able to use for Him in the future somehow. What are they?
