I Was an Early Internet Camgirl

It’s a law: the second a technology exists, someone send dirty pictures. Indie camgirls didn’t start with OnlyFans. We’ve been there as long as there’s been an internet. This is what it was like in the webcam Wild West.

Pay Per Minute in the 1-800 Age

When I moved to Florida, I had some wilding to do. I danced at a strip club for a bit (I was terrible at it) then went to a New York style peepshow (much more my speed).

When I learned that I could make money getting naked without the guy even being on the premises, though? That’s when I knew I’d found my niche.

Back in the 90s, if you had internet at home at all, it was dial-up. (And, if you were a sporadically employed stripper and peepshow girl like me, most of that internet was via super slow hacked Bluelight discs.)

If you were show off your bod on the internet, you had to go to a studio, and the Tampa Bay area, with its huge adult industry, was ready.

There were a bunch of outlets in the area. Some paid a flat hourly or shift rate. Others paid models a percentage of what they earned per minute.

At all of them, the process to buy a show went like this: you’d be in the free chat (with or without video). A guy would want to take you private. This involved giving him an 800 number to call, where he’d give his credit card number and the number of minutes he wanted to spend in a show. Then, someone from the office would let you know you’d been booked and you’d head out of the free cam studio down the hall to a separate room for shows.

On to the Cam House

The original pay per minute cam studio where I worked changed their payment structure. While they’d originally offered a flat rate of pay for the shift, plus small commissions for privates, they were switching to a straight commission structure (illegal, since we were employees, but labor abuses were rampant in that biz).

I wasn’t too broken up about it, though, as I already had a new gig at a different kind of cam site.

If you’re old enough, you may remember reading about Voyeur Dorm, the site that paid girls’ tuitions if they agreed to live in a 24-7 cam house. So, a couple of things;

– yes, the girls actually lived there. It was actually crazy restrictive. They couldn’t leave the house unless they brought a camera operator with them to capture their outing.

– no, they weren’t students getting their tuition paid. While I’m sure a few were taking classes, most were just chicks getting free rent plus weekly pay.

I didn’t work in that house. I was with another one that, weirdly, was on the same premises that had once been the peep show I’d worked at.

The house had two bedrooms, a bar area, a living room, kitchen, and a massive, multi-head showering room.

There were two major rules in the house and on the site: no penetration with toys or fingers. And, you had to be naked all the time.

Since I’m a natural nudist anyway, it was a perfect fit.

We had hundreds of chatters who would hang out with us all day every day.

Since all the customers were accessing the site via monthly subscription, there was no upselling and no pay per minute shows. Instead, we each had to put on three performances a day.

Getting soapy in the shower was a common one, as were simple (external) toy masturbation shows.

But, a creative approach was always more pleasing for us and the guests. There were games of oiled twister, bouncing hopper races across the living room… I even once arranged a jello-wrestling match. (Wear goggles if you do that. Gelatin stings when it gets in your eyes!)

Eventually, improving technology did the cam house in. Home broadband was more common now. There wasn’t the need to pay 15 girls to hang out all day in a rented venue.

The camsites were going to home entertainers, so I went home, too.

Going Indie

When I first made an account on iFriends, a day with 200 performers online was a rare glut. I just checked one of the currently popular sites, and there are nearly 6,000 just in the “Women” category! Camgirls making money in the modern era, I salute you!

But, it wasn’t always candyland even back when I was performing. Just like now, you needed them to figure out how to stand out. I’m not the prettiest girl you’ll see on the ‘net. By the time I’d gone indie, I wasn’t the youngest, either.

What I did have was an encyclopedic knowledge of kinks and fetishes.

I made it my calling to understand every weird turn on under the sun. Like seeing a lady vacuum in vintage girdles? I was your girl. Into feet? I’d crush you under mine. Jerk-off instructions or strap-on play? Let’s go!

I was one of the original models on an early foot fetish site, Evil Feet. That factor gave me a bit of cache, and I even had a few fans who followed me from site to site back in the day.

Eventually, I burnt out on cam and being “on” all the time. I started cutting my camming hours and spending more time writing. Soon, I was making nearly as much writing as I’d been before from being on cam. One day, I just never turned the webcam back on at all.

I do miss it sometimes, and have random thoughts about at least doing a steamy photo shoot. But mostly, I consider the book on that fun, wild, taxing era closed, except for the stories.

What kinds of adventures would you like to hear more about?
