Refiner’s Fire
“You can’t hate the roots of a tree,
and not hate the tree.”
– Malcolm X
Whenever someone says
“All I want” or “All
I wanted,”
It is never all they want,
Nor all they wanted.
Whenever they say
All I said or All I asked
It is never all they said,
And never all they asked.
The word cannot be spoken
Without implying
Its implications.
You cannot hate the machine
And not hate its component
Parts.
You cannot hate the key
And love the lock,
Hate time
And love the clock,
Be careful
Without taking stock,
Love me truly
And leave me here to rot.
