A very small percentage of the women interviewed said that they wanted peace or the ability to forgive. The vast majority wanted their dad to realize the pain they caused, to acknowledge their wrongs, to feel shame, to make it up to them, to provide answers, explanations and most of all apologies.

I heard phrases such as “I’ll forgive when he apologizes” and “I’ll be able to heal when he admits his wrongs.”

There are several very sad things that stand out to me about all of these responses.

First of all people are not really aware how much of their power they’re giving away. Over and over again the women were putting all of their energy on what the OTHER person might do rather than what THEY can do. Namely accept, forgive and let go.

You don’t need anyone’s permission to heal your wounds. If you’re alive for any decent amount of time, you have things you need to forgive. And also things you need to be forgiven for. You are worthy of healing yourself simply because you exist, no other reason needed.

Second, it’s obvious that most of us are not taught that forgiveness is something we do for ourselves.

When it comes to personal growth, there are 2 types of attitudes that one can have: empowerment or victimhood.

Empowerment isn’t an end result, it’s what you claim with every step forward that you make, starting with the first one and every one thereafter.

​Victimhood can present itself in many ways such as negative self talk and feeling helpless, but the one that most affects your growth is avoiding responsibility.

​What you might have suffered in terms of neglect, abandonment or indifference, is obviously not your fault.​But the work of healing, accepting and forgiving in order to transform your pain into growth, is absolutely one’s responsibility.

​If you want to create a better life, victimhood simply isn’t an option.

Heal your body: We can’t disconnect our body from our minds, so all of our negative thoughts and feelings show up in our bodies eventually as illness and disease. Louise Hay has talked about this in great detail in her amazing book You Can Heal Your Life.

Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself that everyone around you ultimately benefits from.
