He looked up at the woman sitting across from him; she was at her desk, working. Silence echoed in the room, the only thing standing out was the woman tapping away at her keyboard. He sat on a small chair across from her. He was tired of their long journey in space, and working the ship was becoming more and more tiresome.
“Tomorrow’s when we’re finally outta this hellhole,” the woman said with her eyes glued to her screen. The man sighed and looked back down to see the empty space below him through the all see-through room made of clear glass.
“I can’t wait to go back. Workin’ a ship this long really does it to ya.” The woman nodded in agreement without looking at the man. The man rummaged through his right pocket and pulled out his mandatory issued weapon. It was a short pistol that was clear white with no noticeable marks on it. He chuckled at the sight of the gun. How’d they get to the point where they needed to be armed now? Is the problem really that bad now?
“What if they’re on our ship?” the man asked. She glanced up from her computer and stared at the man directly in the eyes, pausing for a brief moment before speaking.
“You know if we thought like that we’d be long gone by now,” she looked back at her screen and was focused again like nothing had happened.
“Yeah I guess the odds are low-” A loud noise cut the man off and it started to echo throughout the ship. A faint emergency siren went off in the distance as the white, clear spaceship reflected the red coming from the various sirens on the ship. They both shot glances at each other and shot up from their seats.
They had been trained for this since the beginning of their schooling, and yet the man was hesitant to walk towards his duty. The woman started to run to where they were supposed to be as the man stopped for a moment in the middle of the hallway. The woman, several steps in front of him looked back and paused her running. The man couldn’t bear to look up into the eyes of the woman. The woman looked over her shoulder and back at the man.
“Just one more day,” she said, and she offered a warm smile. The man looked back up at the woman, he stared into her eyes for a moment before sighing and getting back up. They ran across the long hallway into the small compartment that was at the back of the ship. They walked into the dark room, it wasn’t shining red like the others, because of how small and far away from the rest of the spaceship it was, so they took out flashlights from their left pockets and began to put on their suits hung up at the rack over their normal clothes. They took the helmets from the cabinet out, and the woman rummaged through it for a toolbox. There was dust all over the top of the toolbox and on its handles. The woman blew on the toolbox and waved it up and down, dust started to fly out from the sides of the toolbox, but the toolbox was still a clear white, something it shared with almost everything else on the ship, the boring color if you could call it one.
They opened the latch on the very edge of the room and went outside. Being outside of the ship had always scared the man, it was somehow more quiet and empty than the inside of the ship. Anything, or anyone outside of the ship felt like it would drift away, losing all meaning.
They started to cling along the handles and climbed towards the bottom of the ship. The woman opened the toolbox and stayed completely still, staring at the man. The man raised a concerned brow.
“Now’s not the time, what’s going on with you?” The woman took off the helmet she was wearing and dropped it. The helmet continued to drift slowly until it would eventually be out of sight, into the abyss. His heart was pounding, taking over the dead silence around him.
The woman looked at the man straight in the eyes and started to shift, first her legs, then her body and arms, and finally her face. It was red and orange all over with sharp teeth and a long, green tongue. He slowly pulled his weapon out of its holster. He looked at the abomination with tears dripping down his face. He pointed it at the woman with his shaky hand and paused, he slowly let go of the weapon as it drifted away into the endless abyss. The monster stared down at the man, and he made one final shout, while sobbing with tears dripping down his face.
“Not you, Lily!” he yelled, then paused for a moment to sob some more. “Not you…” he whimpered so low it probably couldn’t even hear it, not that it would care. It only stared back at the man with complete silence, its eyes shimmering with hunger, hunger for him.
