You start your journey to the depths of the dark forest. The sky is gray as it grows later and darker with the clouds gathering above. Your eyes dart from side to side as you continue walking. You feel as though something is watching you. The feeling creeps up your spine as you continue onward, but you decide against stopping, so you can get your bearings.
In one of your lessons, you were given some basic information about the monsters that inhabit the forests. Some of them are said to be friendly and some not. The only thing certain is that no matter how big or small these creatures may look, they do not like to be disturbed. They are rumored to be a lot more dangerous than they sound, although you have yet to see such a being on the other side of any mountains or rivers.
As the wind picks up around you, you pull your cloak tighter around your shoulders. You know how cold it gets this deep into the forest. You shiver involuntarily at the thought. You have yet to find an adequate hiding spot for when the sun goes down. There isn't anywhere that would stay dry enough for you to sleep.
There is nothing you can really do except pray the night will pass by before the next snowfall hits the kingdom. You know that it is highly likely that your prayers won't come true, however. If something was going to attack you right now, the odds are high it wouldn’t wait until after dark. Even if there is nowhere safe to hide, someone might still happen along during the day. It takes time to walk through forests.
With that in mind, you keep walking forward even as your feet begin to ache. The forest seems to go on forever without any sign of life. You don't dare stop for fear of what may await you, so you keep walking. Every few minutes, you glance behind you and check if there are is anything following you. After you turn your back, you hear a loud roar from behind you. A wave of panic strikes through you. Is the creature gaining on you?
As your breath comes fast and heavy, you realize that running away won't work. There is no way you'll outrun it. You're going to die here, whether you want to or not. As much as it hurts to acknowledge it, you must be ready. There isn't another option. You can't fight your fate.
You stand straight, take a deep breath, and wait for death to arrive. This is the end of your road.
It never does.
A moment later, you open your eyes to see that you've been saved. An arrow lands not too far away, and you turn toward the person who shot it. A woman is standing over you with her bow pointed directly at the center of your chest. Her long white hair flows freely in the wind, and she stares at you with fierce determination. She has to be around your age, but there isn't any trace of weariness in her expression. You quickly draw your sword from kohorcium steel and attack her leg, the sword cuts her leg, and you start running for your goddamn life.
She screams in pain and starts shooting blindly after you.
The last two shots hit their mark and cut through your back, cutting through your clothes and skin. Blood begins gushing out of your wounds, and you fall forward. Your face is turned away from her, so you miss seeing her face twist in disgust.
The pain is excruciating. Everything hurts. Your lungs are burning. You can feel a lump growing in your throat and the world starts turning blurry. You can't move. You're too weak to crawl or run anymore. All you can do is lie in pain while the woman walks towards you and pulls you onto her back. Before she leaves, however, she kneels down next to you and grabs a handkerchief from her belt before binding it tightly around her wound.
You close your eyes and allow yourself to finally surrender. Your vision goes black, and suddenly she says, "Don't worry, big boy, this is only the beginning of your endless pain".
