She was being dragged on the cold forest floor, her legs restrained by a tight grip. She tried to grab onto the ground or trees to stop her advancement but the Creature was too strong. She panted and struggled as she looked up to see the spiky, black, and hunchback back of the Creature.
“Let..go! Let go!” she shouted.
The Creature did not stop and nobody would be here to save her. Her dress and necklace pendant became dirty as they were dragged through the ground. The Creature snorted.
I was trying to escape one monster and now I’ve found myself taken by a worse one.
She cried out one more time before the Creature turned around and stared at her with its glowing white eyes. She immediately passed out.

Officer Davidson remained in his patrol car as the erratic man walked into town. He immediately took out a cigar and began to light up. Sowersville was a small tight-knit community. New people never lasted very long and they often came here to cause trouble investigating the number of disappearances. Amateur bloggers and YouTubers all had their ways of pestering people. He squinted forward as the man held up a photo and spoke to pedestrians. Each person promptly ignored him and quickly walked away. The man was off-putting with his jittering sudden movements, sudden shouting, and irate behavior when nobody would speak to him. He then saw as the man looked towards his car with an immediate feeling of relief on his face. The man rushed forward bumping himself into the car.
Small town miles out in the wilderness and we somehow get a druggie.
“Hey watch it! You high or something?” Davidson asked.
The man eagerly approached his window, “s-sorry officer! I was just excited to see you..And no, I’m not high, I don’t need drugs to be high.”
The man smiled as he held up a photo of a woman. The woman had very unkempt brown hair, large sags on her eyes, and a had a dazed expression.
“Have you seen my mom? This isn’t her best photo, she looks like this but worse. She’s also carrying a very speeeecial pendent of mine!” He said.
“Listen Son-” he said.
“I’m Daniel. I’m looking for my Mom.” Daniel said.
“Listen, Daniel, there are plenty of people who go missing in these parts every year and every year some fool goes looking for them only to not come back. I’d suggest you best listen to your fears and leave.” Davidson said.
“Fears? This town is kind of creepy with its people all staring at me, everything being dead silent, and the forest that looks endless but, I’m not afraid of snakes, bears, robbers, lions, ghosts, or…” he leaned his face into the window, “Cops!”
I better get rid of this guy by sending him up to William.
Davidson rolled his eyes, “See that hotel up a ways on the mountain? Try there and leave us alone.”
Daniel looked towards the direction Davidson pointed, “That run-down shack? Looks delightfully creepy. Thank you, Officer.”
That’s one more undesirable for the trash heap. He thought

William hung up the phone as soon as Daniel entered his hotel. Davidson had just told him he had sent another one up there. What he didn’t tell him was that he was carrying an ax. Normally this would be of cause for alarm, but William did not fret. Daniel walked up to his counter and held up a photo of a woman. He remembered her, she was the one the townspeople couldn’t send up here, her drug-riddled son however was another story.
“Yes, yes I remember her follow me,” William said.
He walked over and led Daniel into a dark closet, there was just enough room for the two of them, he motioned for Daniel to come in front of him. Spiders crawled along the walls as they entered and with each step they took it seemed to get darker along with a heavy feeling of uneasiness. William had done this many times, but people who had no mind of their own were easiest to lure into the basement. He reached for the lever in the corner as a trapdoor opened up underneath Daniel’s feet. Daniel yelped.
KACLUNK!
He fell inside as William pulled another lever opening up a secret spiral staircase. He walked down to an old wooden door and peeked through the eye hole to the basement. The basement was not very well lit, just enough for him to see some details but most of it was obscured in darkness.
“Ow! I almost fell on my new ax!” Daniel shouted.
Idiot. William thought.
He watched as Daniel got up and looked around the darkroom, “You know if I wasn’t so busy looking for my pendent, I mean my Mom, I’d stay here!”
The basement was the dwelling for the Goblin, and the Goblin demanded sacrifices. William watched in the back as two red eyes peeked from the tunnel as Daniel continued to stumble in the dark. He took little pleasure in this, the Goblin would eat a traveler from time to time and the Goblin wouldn’t eat them. The Goblin inched forward calling out to Daniel as the man turned around clutching onto his ax. He couldn’t see his expression, but he imagined he was terrified. The Goblin then jumped forward as William turned around hearing a blood curling scream from the Goblin. He had never heard it cry out in such a way as he heard the slicing of the human body followed by dead silence. It was then the door burst open much to William’s horror.
No! I’ve displeased the Goblin by giving him the druggie, I’m going to die!
He closed his eyes again when he heard, “You know my Mother did not look that ghastly!”
He opened his eyes to see green blood on Daniel’s ax as he loomed over him, he was immediately picked up and shoved against the wall.
“I don’t appreciate being tricked buddy!” Daniel said smiling.
He looked in the background to see the dead Goblin chopped into two.
But the Goblin was so quick..so strong? Who could actually kill it? Am I finally free of this burden?
Daniel slammed his right fist against the wall, “PAY ATTENTION!”
William’s eyes immediately snapped back as he realized his troubles were far from over.
“I’m sorry! OH I’M SORRY PLEASE DON’T HURT ME! I was forced to do it!” he wailed.
“Hurt you? Hmm, I didn’t see many TVs around here, but perhaps you’ll recognize me.” Daniel then creaked his head sideways and smiled really wide.
William felt sweat fall from his brow as he put the pieces together, “Oh noooooo! I’m going to be chopped up and killed!”
Tears burst from his eyes as he finally realized his problems had just become much bigger than they ever were with the Goblin and being a Motel manager.
“Chill, I only kill monsters. You have nothing to worry about if you’re a good man.” Daniel said.
William nodded his head still crying, “Y-yes-yes I am a good man. Thank you. Thank you.”
“Now, did you pull this stunt with my Mother? Are those her bones in there?” Daniel asked.
William shook his head, “We couldn’t. She was wanted by the Wildershifter..! There’s nothing you can do now.”
“Hah! So I just have to go into the woods and find her? Good. Thank you…” Daniel eyed his nametag, “William.”
“You’re going to go after the Wildershifter? You’ll die!” he said.
“It sounds fun,” Daniel said, “Besides I can’t let that happen to my mother. What kind of person are you?”
He dropped him on the floor as he silently thanked whatever he could think to believe in. Daniel however raised his ax.
“What..NO! You said you wouldn’t kill me!” he said.
“I said unless you were a good man, and feeding folks to a monster isn’t very good. In fact it’s kind of monstrous behavior..”
“Noooooooo!” he shouted as the ax came swinging down.
———————————————————————————————–
Davidson could smell the stench from his patrol car. That was per usual for victims of the Goblin, he didn’t know why he wanted to check on William, but something about Daniel left him uneasy. He walked up and opened the door.
“William?.. William are you here?” he called out.
There was no response and he looked down to see stains of green blood on the carpet. His mind turned to surprise as he looked forward to see the closet door open. Taking out his gun, he slowly walked forward and then down the staircase. Usually, when he disposed of bodies, there was a heavy feeling in his chest each time he walked lower. This time, however, he felt nothing as if he was just walking down normal steps. He was used to this feeling for years and the lack of it made him uneasy. He noticed that the walls had scrap marks similar to that of an ax. He continued walking ready to shoot at anything that moved, he approached the entrance and saw that the wooden door to the Goblin’s lair had been chopped down.
“That’s not possible,” he said.
He looked forward to see the Goblin’s body, the scaly creature was in pieces. He took a step forward to take a closer look as he felt himself trip on something. He dropped his gun as it blasted off into the lair. He remained on the ground for cover and waited for the bullet to stop rattling off. He then turned around to see what he had tripped on and saw it.
“William..! What could have done this..? That man?” he asked himself.
Suddenly the heavy feeling in his chest returned in tenfold.
Was that a man? What am I dealing with here? No one’s ever been able to harm the Goblin.
He noticed a sticky note near the body as he reached over to investigate.
“This man was a monster. You’re welcome.” -Dashing Daniel.
Dashing Daniel?
Then it hit him, months ago on his TV. The Most Wanted channel. Dashing Daniel was an infamous serial killer who left a calling card on the bodies of his victims. The sick man claimed he only killed “monsters.”
Sowersville has been defined by monsters and now I’ve let one from the outside world into it.
He got up and rushed out the door, if Daniel was looking for his mother, he’d likely go into the woods. He wouldn’t be able to find her, but he was likely to come back. He’d put the other officers on alert, they’d be waiting for him in case he did return.
