This is the story of a teenage boy who got knocked down by life.
It’s that time again, the bells are jingling, the entire streets covered with colorful lights and Christmas trees, the choirs come out to sing Christmas melodies, and me…… well, I’m just there. Several years ago my parents had an argument and my mom signed for an annulment and got separated from my dad. My dad was captured by the police for running a robbery gang, and I ran away from home so they won’t take me to an orphanage. I spent my years in the streets begging and looking for food to eat, and a place to sleep when the night falls. I was a bit educated so I tried to stay away from bad acts on the streets and I spent most of times on the streets alone. Every time I keep having hopes that all will be better but it doesn’t normally gets better, but this year’s Christmas was going to change everything.
As we approach Christmas, stores began to bring great offers especially the food and snack stores. I had my eyes fixed on a store that had a new badge of snacks and candy. I waited patiently for the moment everyone went away and I bought a few and ran to the top of an apartment building. I sat there and ate my candy. The night was cold and I could barely open my eyes. Frozen, I wondered where I was going to sleep tonight. I looked down and saw everyone happy with one another as the night became late. I looked to my right and saw kids with their parents in an amusement park. I came down and headed for the amusement park. I saw different rides and different happy faces as I walked around. I tried to get on one ride but for that I need a ticket, and to get a ticket I need money. As I walked face down heading out of the park, I bumped into a girl. She looked my age, as I looked at her from head to toe and compared her neat looking clothes to the rags I’m wearing.
“Hello” she said.
But I didn’t reply.
“Is everything OK? Where are your parents? Are you lost” she asked as I left no answer to her questions. After glancing at each other for a while, I slowly turned and ran away. I found a place around the park where i sat gazing at the night sky. Minutes later I saw the girl heading home with her parents so I followed in hopes to find out more about her and what made someone like her talk to someone like me with so much care. She came from a decent home in a decent neighborhood, with parents who seemed to have decent well paying jobs. After my observation I slowly walked out of the neighborhood with a sad face although I was a bit touched by the event that took place sometimes back. The next day was filled with a lot of activities on the streets; from songs to Christmas sales. I just went to a particular spot and sat. Minutes later people started offering money to me with smiles on their faces. I got up to $50 just by sitting down on a spot. Hungry and excited I got up to go get something to eat at a kiosk. On my way I saw the girl again with one of her friend heading to a snack shop so I followed them there. I watched them from the window of the shop as I didn’t get in. They just bought a few bars of chocolate and headed out. As they came out I walked the other way in hopes for them not to see me. As I took a right turn through an alley way, we saw face to face again. I starred at her as she looked at her friend and back at me, then she gave me a little smile.
“Hey I know you, you’re the guy that bumped into me yesterday at the park” she said.
“Do you stay around here” she asked, but I didn’t reply.
“Do you know how to speak?” again another question without answer.
“Fine I’ll let you be…., but have this” she said as she offered me a bar of her chocolate. She sensed that I was one of the street kids.
I just starred at her, her friend and the bar of chocolate in front of me as I hesitated to take it. She slowly brought down her hand and requested she and her friend take their leave. As she walked pass me I felt an aura…… different from others, and I got the courage to talk.
“I’m sorry” I said.
She stopped and slowly turned and walked towards me.
“What did you say?!” she said with shock and excitement on her face. With a few seconds pause, I replied
“I’m sorry…. for not replying to your questions…. yesterday, and I’m sorry for not replying to you again today.”
“So you can talk, but hesitated……., why?”
“Because I’m not used to people actually talking to me. They normally offer whatever they have to me and walk away. And I don’t have……. people around me…. so I don’t talk to anyone.”
“I’m so sorry to hear that, here have a bar of chocolate. And don’t worry, if you need someone to talk to I’m here just tell me where and when to meet you”
I took a long silent as she said to me again;
“If you don’t feel comfortable about it then you don’t have to tell me” she said as she turned ready to leave.
“You can find me under the pedestrian bridge by mid-day everyday. That’s where I stay during the day whenever I need comfort and peace” I replied as she turned back towards me and nodded her head.
“OK, I’d like to meet you then” she said a she walked out with her friend.
“You know you are just too nice. I mean you don’t even know that guy but you act like friends that just had an argument” her friend said to her while walking away.
I went to get some food and walked around admiring the streets decorated with Christmas trees and decorations and the artists cheering everyone with their carols. For the first time in a long time I felt happy, maybe it was because of the nice girl who talked to me. She made me feel not worthless and that installed a little bit of peace and happiness. I returned to my spot under the pedestrian bridge and tried to get a bit of sleep but was awakened several minutes by someone who tapped my leg. As I looked up to see who was responsible for that interruption, it was the nice girl. She just looked and smiled at me.
“Surprised to see me?” she said holding a polythene bag that seems to be filled with a lot of stuffs.
“Yeah, I didn’t think you would come today….or ever”
“Oh come on why would you say that”
We both starred at each other for a second and then I broke the silence and asked a very intriguing question.
“If you don’t mind me asking what’s your name?”
“Oh, my name’s Hope…… what about you?”
I took a short pause because I hesitated to say my name.
“If you are not comfortable telling me…… don’t bother”
“It’s not like that……. My name’s David”
“David. Such a nice name, it suits you”
“Thanks. Soooo why exactly are you here?”
“Well you told me to meet you under the bridge anytime during the day, and I decided to do it today……. and maybe everyday”
“What?! Why would you want to come here everyday?”
“Cause I want to, it’s really peaceful and besides I think you really need someone to talk to”
“Not really, I’ve been alone for years so no hard felling there. Besides I don’t think it’s appropriate for someone like you to be seen with someone like me”
“Well I don’t really care. They should say whatever they want to. I’m not like them, I’m different and I have a heart”.
At that moment I knew what it felt for someone to care about a person. She offered me some food she brought from home. We ate together, talked and laughed and for the first time in years I felt happy.
“It’s getting late, I better start heading home. See you next time”
As she walked away I just sat there admiring the nice person that just made me see the world in a positive manner. I wish everyday would be like this.
