Do you find yourself in a rut?
Why aren't you trying something new?
Do you want to start something but don't know where to begin?
Every day, we all have a lot of thoughts running through our heads. Some of those ideas and thoughts revolve around things we want to try or change about our lives.
The trouble is starting.
We can think and think for as long as we want, but the majority of us get stuck at starting. We plan and plan but planning is different to taking action. Taking action means committing. We don’t know how to start and we’re somewhat scared of what happens when we do, we’re scared of the unknown future.
Many don’t take action for this reason. They don’t think about change and they live each day the same, afraid to wander into the unknown and what could be. Because when you do a whole variety of paths open up to you. You could fail. You could succeed. You could learn something new about yourself. You could learn something new about the people around you.
But the reality is that change is happening all the time. Each day we get older, out body changes, our friends and family may get married, have kids, die. You might be fired tomorrow. You might become paralysed. You might get a promotion. You might win the lottery. The world is moving forward, and so we need to too.
Change is happening to you, so why not also make change happen. Be in control of certain changes.
In February 2021 I decided that I would go running every day for 30 days.
To begin with my runs were only a few minutes long, starting at 5 mins and increasing by a minute most days following.
In that 30 days of running, I went from being able to run for 5 minutes: self-conscious about my running, struggling to run very fast or very far, to concluding the 30 days with running for 30 minutes non-stop and being able to run 5K in around 27 minutes, no longer self-conscious about running.
Since those 30 days I have continued running, though not so religiously, and have managed to reduce my 5K personal best time to 23:30, run two half-marathons and run around 4 times a week.
Running has also led me to think about other areas of my physical health and body: I have added workouts in the morning before my runs to focus on losing weight and muscle gain. I am a lot more conscious about the food I eat, is it helping me with my running and my overall health or am I eating processed foods which will hinder me. And I am much more aware of my body, ensuring, if I don’t go for a run that day, that I move my body and don’t sit most of the day behind a laptop.
Not only that but there have been the mental benefits too.
Running makes me feel good. As we know, running and exercise sends “feel-good” chemicals around the brain, it is there to make use feel good. And, as mentioned previously, I no longer feel self-conscious about my running and am more much confident within myself generally because of this.
It’s also shown me that if I put effort, commitment and consistency into something then I achieve great things.
If you attempt something for 30 days it starts to become a habit. If you continue that on for 90 days, it starts to become your lifestyle.
The habit of running for the first 30 days, and then continuing that on, has changed my lifestyle; my morning routine, my perspective on my health and body, the food I consume.
Along with running I also began writing around a similar time.
I posted each morning for 30 days.
Before that first post I didn’t know if I truly enjoyed writing, I didn’t think I was a good enough writer, I didn’t think I was creative enough.
So I started writing without that judgement upon myself.
You know when you start something, you will most likely suck at it. Of course you will, because you’ve never done it before, you haven’t learnt from failures and mistakes, you haven’t seen what you can do, you haven’t practised the art of doing.
Again, after that 30 days I haven’t been as religious with writing, other projects came up and took precedence, but I have kept it up as regularly as I can. Because I enjoy it and I do feel myself getting better at it.
Writing too has become ingrained more in my life, now dedicating time to writing most days, changing my lifestyle to ensure I include it in.
Not only that but, with writing, I have been reading much more. You’ve got to find inspiration somewhere right? Writing each day has helped me build my reading habit so that I now read twice a day, in the morning and evening — getting through many books, increasing my knowledge and gaining insight and perspective into different ideas, philosophies, and stories.
30 days. 720 hours. 43,200 minutes.
You’re not going to spend each minute or hour on trying something new.
You probably already have a pretty busy schedule, working most days, looking after family, spending time with your partner, other social commitments.
But what if you took a little bit of time each day for 30 days.
This could be 10 minutes, half an hour, an hour, whatever suits you.
Do remember, my first run was 5 minutes long.
5 minutes was it all took to begin the change.
Perhaps you spend 20 minutes each day learning French.
20 minutes doesn’t seem like a lot of time, but 20 minutes each day for 30 days? Well that’s a total of 10 hours of learning French. Now that’s quite a bit and you probably have a few words or phrases lodged in your memory ready to expand on or use.
And then after the 30 days you could continue it on, maybe upping the amount of time after you realise that your schedule can in fact be adjusted, or keeping it the same as it works for you.
There are no expectations here, it is what you are capable of doing and fitting into your life.
The main thing about this is that all it takes is 30 days.
Well, all it takes is the first day. The first step.
But it’s best to commit to 30 days, no matter what, to make change in your life.
We are all capable of change, and usually it’s not as scary as we think it is, but if you don’t make changes in your life, then your life will be subject to what happens to you, rather than taking control of what can happen.
Starting can be scary, you don’t know where to start. But no one knows where to start. You just have to start. You have to decide to start. Start small, that’s fine. Do 5 minutes of running just like I did. But do it, don’t think about it.
And if you start for 30 days, you commit and you can track your progress and realise that the change isn’t as scary, and that you are capable of much more than you perhaps thought you were.
And down the line, if you continue with whatever practise you choose, you start to see your life changing too.
You can change your life with 30 days. Heck, you can change your life with one day.
But it requires taking action and committing.
Now, how are you going to change your life?
