Yes navel, you heard it right!
Navel is the center of the body. It plays a major role in the development of the body from the very beginning of life. It is the center of the body to maintain the body postures while walking, sitting, running, standing or any other physical activity. And the center of the body regulates our physical and mental health. Hence maintaining the center is very important. And maintaining the center can improve our physical and mental health.
And sometimes the navel can move, no no not at all like a dance move! but yes it does move.
Navel can move upwards, downwards or sideways and it’s called navel displacement.
Navel displacement can cause a lot of stomach issues like motions, constipation, indigestion and can also cause sudden weight gain or loss. And the medicines don’t work, scientifically speaking, because it is due to the displacement of a nerve from its usual place in the body. But in Ayurveda there is a way to fix the navel(nabhi).
And also ways to keep it centered.
Well just like you I never heard of it before until I experienced it!
Let me tell you how I discovered it!
There was this one day which of course happened to be the day one of my discovery. It was a normal day, getting up, having breakfast, reading a book, watching Netflix, riding my bike and so on. Later that day when I came home I had shower and was about to have my dinner and I felt something weird around my navel. My stomach started hurting. And the minute I got off my couch I couldn’t stand straight. Slouching my way to the kitchen, I told my mom about the pain and her reaction was, “what’s wrong? What happened? Are you alright?” There were a lot of questions and my answer was, ”I don’t know.” I was so confused and in pain that I didn’t know what was wrong, but my mom knew it.
She asked me to lie down on the floor resting my body against the straight floor with my toes facing the ceiling. I was like okay but what is going on? Then she checked my toes, they were not in level, one of them was shorter than the other one. And literally It was, I’m not kidding i saw it too. It was so unreal. Then my mom said, “ Now I am going to press my thumb into your belly button and check where exactly the nerve has moved because I feel your navel has shifted so just relax and take a deep breath.” The moment she pressed her thumb deep inside my belly button I screamed, it was painful. Then she told me it has shifted upwards which of course didn’t make any sense to me. She told me I can fix it by pulling the leg, giving a jerk to make the nerve move to its place. But I was too scared to say yes to it so I chose to be in pain anyways.
But it didn’t stop me there.
I researched
So the first thing we all do is google it right? Well that’s what I did. I was shocked to see the results and thought how come I never came across this before. The navel displacement was a real thing. So let me share some insights on it….
How does it even moves
There are several reasons for the movement of the nerve like:-
Lifting heavy weights
Eating spicy food
Sudden jerk in the body
Holes in the road
Physical activity done carelessly
Jumping or landing on one leg
Sudden twisting or bending
Losing control while walking due to some obstruction
What it does to your body
The navel displacement is directly connected to the stomach, nervous system and muscles which can affect each one differently.
If the navel shifts upward it causes constipation, even sometimes heartburn.
If the navel moves downward it causes diarrhea.
If the navel shifts towards the left hip it can cause pain in the abdomen and can affect the liver and the right kidney.
If the navel shifts towards the left side it can cause stiffness in the right lower part of the body affecting the pancreas and spleen.
If the navel shifts towards the lower right side it affects the left side of the body like left kidney, spleen and sometimes left leg.
And if you have any one of these symptoms for too long then it can affect your mental health too.
How to detect it!
1} As explained earlier in my experience, lie down on your back on the straight floor with your toes together facing the ceiling, ask someone to check your toes to see whether they are equal. if one toe is lower than the other then you are suffering from navel displacement. And if they are equal in height then you are not suffering from it. You can check it for yourself too.
2} Secondly, you can lie down on your back on the floor while you have an empty stomach, asking someone to press their thumb into your belly button a little deep to feel the pulse of the nerve. The nerve which is the center of the navel and the body has a pulse. So while pressing into the belly button the person can sense the pulse and detect where the pulse has moved, upwards, downwards or sideways.
The cure
First let me tell you the cure that worked for me like a miracle!
Yoga
Yes yoga did wonders to me. While I was researching my condition I was looking for the cure which didn’t involve pulling my leg though! Yoga can help get the nerve in place. It was such a relief because I do yoga, in fact I love yoga. And after doing a few specific yoga poses my toes were equal the next morning. Let me share those 6 yoga Asanas:-
1} Suptavajrasana(Reclined thunderbolt pose)
2} Paschimottasana(Forward bend pose)
3} Naukasana(Boat pose)
4} Uttanpadasana(Raised leg pose)
5} Bhujangasana(Cobra pose)
6} Dhanurasana(Bow pose)
Now if you do yoga then you can watch and learn the poses but if you are new to it then expert supervision is recommended. Don’t worry this is not the only cure, it’s ok if you don’t do yoga but there is always a room for trying. Just imagine, these five poses helped me move my nerve in the center so what wonders can it do to our body and mind if we do yoga regularly?
Massage
Gentle massage around your navel can relieve the pain but of course you can’t do it by yourself, a specialist’s supervision is recommended.
Amla(Indian Gooseberry)
You can make a paste out of Amla powder and apply it around the navel to bring it back in place. To make a paste you can add lemon juice into one spoon of amla powder and apply it twice a day.
Mustard oil
You can pour a few drops of mustard oil in your navel on an empty stomach for three-four days for best results. Well this may sound weird but putting something in your navel is not that uncommon in fact it is meant to be more beneficial, safe and also very effective. Even for other healing related to skin and body can be done through the navel(umm that can be my next topic).
Fennel seeds
Okay, drink your seeds! Yes that’s right you can drink fennel seeds, of course with the help of a grinder though. You can grind fennel seeds and jaggery like for example 10 grams of fennel seeds and 50 grams of jaggery and consume it on an empty stomach in the morning for two-three days to bring back the navel in place.
And there are a lot of such home remedies to relieve the pain and bring back the navel in place which you can find in more articles on navel displacement.
These home remedies which are effective in most of the cases like in my case yoga was the best option. You can try these remedies too as long as they are safe with no side effects on your body and also it is not necessary that what worked for me will work for you too so you have to find the right way that works for your body. And if your condition and pain remains the same then you can consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or a Naturopathy doctor.
